Wishing Well

Sometimes I’m afraid my wishes wont come true.

The child inside shakes and cries.

Did she do something wrong

to poison the water or hex magics charm?

I tell my aching heart to be still.

Every thump and crack

reminds me of a locked safe of unwished wishes.

Are they ever too big or too small to risk?

Today

I call out every nerve

trembling behind some

triggered hormone

and we march on for

a trip to the well

to pay homage and interest

for unrequited dreams

forgotten wishes

and a hope that

perhaps this time

fear and doubt will not win.
