What’s your writing style?
In my stories I cut the bull and center my writing around the very topics most readers are challenged with: life, sex, relationships, faith, and self-worth. My characters come alive as close friends. Often unable to provide all the answers, they help to reveal the truth - as best I know it.
Who are your favorite authors?
Like many readers, I have several of those I’d consider to be “timeless”: Maya Angelou, Margaret Atwood, Judy Blume, Jean Craighead George, Zora Neale Hurston, Lois Lowry, Toni Morrison, George Orwell, Daniel Quinn, J.K. Rowling, Alice Walker - and those are just the ones off the top of my head!
What were your favorite books as a teen?
Several books made my favorite list, but each for a different reason - emotions, provoking critical thinking, etc. Here are a few that stand out: THE GIVER by Lois Lowry, FOREVER by Judy Blume, THE COLOR PURPLE by Alice Walker, THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD by Zora Neale Hurston, and ANIMAL FARM by George Orwell. While individually each attract a different audience, collectively they share a common theme: controversy. Whether it be sex, language, ageism, feminism, or political uprising, they all go against the grain of conformity. In my youth I embraced such literary works because I felt in good company with characters, writers, and voices who shared my feelings of rebelliousness and individuality.
When did you know you wanted to be a writer?
Good question! Probably when I was in junior high and began dabbling in creative writing. However, I didn't give myself permission to pursue my passion until after I had children of my own. As I kept encouraging them to follow their dreams, I realized I should set the example by chasing mine.
Why do you write about controversial topics?
Because they're relevant. Because they're necessary. Because somebody has to! Stories come to me, in a variety of waves - driving, just before I fall asleep, or in the middle of dinner. Still, often I see a subtle connection between my favorite books as a teen and my own writing. Many topics that were valid then, are relevant now - with slightly different challenges and eras. Readers are just as curious, they simply need the right book they can relate to.
How do you feel about censorship/banned books?
It's a bunch of bull$#!t - especially for young adults. Books are the gateway to the outside world without actually going anywhere...How else can teens learn critical thinking and coping mechanisms from the sidelines in day-to-day life? The experiences, atmospheres, and lessons from characters in a story shape the way youths portray the world in such an empowering and positive way, it's foolish to squander the art!
Besides, nearly every taboo becomes the underground fad anyway, so pick your battles...
Are your characters based on real people?
Now, now...would you ask a magician to reveal his/her tricks? My characters are real in the sense someone, somewhere, relates to them. Many people I’ve met over the years might attribute characteristics or moods to a single character, but no, none have been a direct match.
What's your inspiration?
My children. I know, it sounds cliche, but I want them to have the opportunity to read stories that provoke conversation with their peers, adults, and teachers. I want them to recognize the consequences in real-life situations without having to always experience them personally. And selfishly, I want them to see me for more than the big-bad-Mama that I sometimes have to be...Perhaps later in their lives they'll be able to look back and say, "Hey, she was alright..."
How do you get published?
As soon as I figure out the precise formula for this question, I'll let you know...
Do you have kids?
Yes. Three. Two sons and a daughter. They're too young to read my stories now, but soon enough they'll surely be part of my target audience.
What's your biggest fear?
Aside from snakes, mountain lions, moose, sharks, and scary-spiders? Not having the opportunity to achieve everything on my ever-growing vision board. I try to follow the motto often preached by my elders: live your life to the fullest - never know when your time's up. With their experience and my motivation, I'm not about to pass up an opportunity to enjoy each and every day I've got left on this planet!
Favorites Things
I have many hobbies - so many, I often have trouble dividing my time between them. When I'm not spending time with my family, I'm usually cooking, crafting, watching a movie, or playing music. And if I can go on an adventure (a.k.a. traveling), a good book - usually several - is essential.
